“A very classy, powerful and fleshy wine, finely scented, mouthfilling and rich, with lovely colour, strong, ripe blackcurrant, plum and spice flavours, and silky tannins.”
– Michael Cooper on the 2010 Cliff Edge, rated 5 stars
Located at the end of the Awhitu Peninsula Cliff Edge is a single vineyard owned and run by the Seagar family. Purchased in 1997 as a retreat from the city, the stunning views from the the1 hectare of vineyards overlooking the Manukau Harbour produces 6 to 8 barrels of Bordeaux style wine, from vines planted in 1996. The unique messo climate and fine clay soils bordering the Manukau Harbour combine to produce a premium blended wine of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. The wine is handcrafted using traditional wine making techniques and matured for 12 months in a combination of French and American Oak barrels, to produce a fragrant and slightly spicy wine. The current 2010 vintage has received 4 1/2stars in Michael Coopers 2011 Wine Guide. Cliff Edge is highly enjoyable now but still with good cellaring potential.
Cliff Edge is a family affair, with the families all four boys all have a hand in assisting with the maintenance of the vineyard with their eldest son Ben becoming an emerging winemaker. Their winemaker Shayne Cox has been involved in establishing the vineyard and making the wine over the past 14 years and has been integral to producing successful wines.
