Ransom Wines was established in 1993, one of the earliest in the Matakana winegrowing region. All the wines are made with grapes grown in their Mahurangi River Vineyard in the Matakana Wine Region. The vineyard is located on a very beautiful north facing slope, framed by bush-clad hills in all directions. The operation today produces around 4000 cases per year and remains in the Ransom family. Owners are Robin and Marion Ransom, son Gabriel is the Winemaker, brother in law Rob Pinder is Vineyard Manager, and son Julian has created the art which graces the Ransom wine labels and the walls of the cellar door and winebar.
As a single-vineyard operation our wines are the singular expression of our land and climate, and celebrate the variations from one vintage to another, which makes each wine totally unique. This avoiding the manufactured uniformity which characterises much of the wine available today – Robin and Marion Ransom.
All vineyards are non-irrigated, which is considered essential for production of high quality wine grapes in many iconic wine growing areas of Europe. Ransom are accredited as stainable and moving towards achieving organic status.
