92/100 – Huon Hooke, Real Review
94/100 – Jane Anson, Decanter (2015 vintage)
93/100 – Jeannie Cho Lee (2015 vintage)
“The bouquet was very funky to open, seemingly due to sulfides, because it disippated with aeration. Very bold, primary and shows good fruit concentration, but the sulfides gave it a very bitter finish at first. Tinny acidity, astringent and hollow. After time in the glass it cleared up remarkably, Black fruits, a hint of oyster-shell, bold and intense. It ended up a very appealing glass of red. Decanting and aeration are strongly recommended. (85% merlot, 7% cabernet sauvignon, 6% cabernet franc, 1% each of malbec and carménère).” – Huon Hooke
Tasting Note: Chateau le Puy Emilien 2016 is a garnet red, with small hints of ruby. The nose is earthy and leathery, with red fruits and exotic spices. A similarly generous yet cooler vintage than the 2015 has given the palate a delicate and ethereal quality, with lively acid balancing the plush tannins. A wine blessed with superb longevity, which will serve as a perfect partner for traditional rustic dishes and delicate, complex cuisine. Great ageing potential with the natural acidity, but plenty to enjoy already.
