Chateau Le Puy Retour des Iles 2018

$950.00 $899.00 inc. GST

Chateau Le Puy is “surely one of Bordeaux’s most overlooked estates” according to Decanter’s Jane Anson

“In any effect, a certain magic has been performed – which, though it doesn’t entirely surprise me, I still find extraordinary. Wine is a constant form of experimentation; and this experiment seems to have performed a certain kind of alchemy.”
– Colin Hay, The Drinks Business

The journey: The barrels of Retour des Iles were loaded aboard the schooner «De Gallant» at the port of La Rochelle in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. After a southward journey along the Spanish coast, they made a first stop in Madeira, a Portuguese archipelago off the coast of Africa. They continued along the Canary Islands to Cap Vert and headed for the Atlantic Ocean. They then travelled to the warm waters of the Caribbean with stopovers at magical destinations such as Barbados, Grenada, Sainte-Lucie and Martinique. The adventure continued along Central America via Nicaragua and Mexico. Brimming with sea air and majestic landscapes, the barrels then made their return journey to France and Bordeaux. A year later and after a tremendous journey, Retour des Iles is ready, enriched by this extraordinary adventure.

Tasting Note: Only 1200 bottles produced. Each year, we at le Puy taste and select a few barrels and load them aboard a sail-ship for an Atlantic crossing. After at least one year of maturing bydynamisation in our cellars, this wine benefits from the ocean swell and winds for almost a year aboard a schooner. It has a dense, dark garnet colour and boasts powerful ripe red fruit aromas. It has a remarkably well-balanced palate, which is round and full-bodied, long and fleshy. It offers up a deep expression of fruit on supple, airy tannins. Tasting triggers an explosion of flavours. This is a wine of outstanding expressiveness with wonderful ageing potential. Each bottle of Rétour des Îles 2018 comes packaged in a special collector’s box, individually numbered.
