“Scorched coffee notes, firm tannins and crisp acidity define the 2015 Churton Vineyard Clod Block Pinot Noir. It’s a wine that clearly still needs time to gather itself, the question is how it will emerge once it reaches the other side of its current funk. There looks to be ample black cherry fruit, a gentle earthiness and ample concentration in this medium-bodied wine, so I’m optimistic.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Grippy and dense with lots of structure and focus. It has ripe black cherry and blackberry fruit but also some firm, grippy structure. The fruit has some ripeness: it’s quite silky and there’s some prettiness. But there’s also a lot of structure here that at the moment dominates a touch. Still, this wine is drinking really well now, but it has massive potential when these tannins resolve a bit.” – Jamie Goode

“A more meaty, spicy and earthy nose with a succulent palate that has plenty of red-cherry fruit. Riper tannins roll into the finish. Drink now.” – James Suckling

Tasting Note: Set 200 metres above sea level, spanning a ridge line between the Omaka and Waihopai valleys, the Churton Vineyard is a unique Marlborough site. Close planted in rows that follow the natural contours of the land, this block is the embodiment of Sam & Mandy Weaver’s intellect and their commitment to site expression. The dense clay soils of the Clod Block lend savoury structure to a vivid fruit core. Picked without a second thought; tannin, volume and savoury structure frame vivid fruit and florals. Early days for seeing the vineyard signature but there’s a grit and depth to this wine that signals great things to come. Spice, cloves, cured meat.
