Folium Chardonnay 2016:

95/100 – Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak

Tasting Note: Mike explains that the Chardonnay from this dry grown site delivers the holy trinity of ‘ripeness, precision and harmony’, reflecting Takaki’s sensitive farming practices and the vineyards ungrafted, deep rooted vines. Sadly Corofin only get to work with just five rows (1,200 vines). Here, the aromatic purity is quite striking with vivid yellow plum and Nashi pear notes. With air crunchier stone fruit comes through and the palate, though quite generous in fruit and clearly ripe, remains super tight and chalky with earthy, mineral-like flavours and a focused, pristine finish. Brilliant Chardonnay.

Carter-Ashmore Chardonnay 2016:

94/100 – Jamie Goode, Wine Anorak

Tasting Note: The Carter Ashmore Vineyard in Marlborough’s Fairhall sub-region is situated on an ancient riverbed and the soils are a mixture of layered silt and alluvial gravels deposited over the eons. This site is farmed organically and is planted to the Mendoza clone of Chardonnay. The ’16 opens with citrus, sherbet and white floral aromas leading to a crisp, juicy, apple and lime noted palate with great tension and a clean and precise, almost salty close with hints of musk and lemon curd. Tightly wound now (amazing to think it’s had 100% malo), this will give more and more with time in bottle.
