“This is a tour de force: a powerful, rich, complex and full-bodied chardonnay with toasty, smoky, buttery aromas. It reveals more of itself the longer it’s in the glass. An immensely satisfying glass of chardonnay.” – Gourmet Traveller Wine
“Remarkably, this vintage is drinking superbly now and has hit the ground running. It’s full-bodied, ample and generous, with magnificent flavour and richness. A truly glorious chardonnay.” – Huon Hooke
“Hand-picked from low-yielding 40yo estate vines, whole-bunch pressed, wild-fermented in barrel, including mlf, matured for 10 months. Bright straw-green; in best Cullen style, a wine that balances richness and complexity with freshness. The flavours focus on white peach, nectarine and fig, with creamy notes offset by citrussy acidity, and the new French oak integrated.” – James Halliday
“Medium-gold in color, this wine takes a little time in the glass to open up, but when it does you can’t stop smelling it. Delicate aromas of grapefruit, pear, apple, cashew and brine are sewn together on the nose and carry to the palate alongside buttered toast and toffee flavors from barrel influence. The palate is silky, slinking seamlessly along an saline spine of oyster shells, toast and citrus, with a delicate line of acidity. Drink now–2028.” – Wine Enthusiast
Tasting Note: Brilliant pale gold in the glass. Perfumed with notes of nectarine, white flowers and citrus which are enhanced by the barrel ageing. Multilayered and already complex on the palate, combining white peach, nectarine and some creamy notes. Wonderfully balanced by the savoury minerality. Drink now if you cannot resist or cellar with confidence for at least 10 years.
Winemaking Notes: Another great season for our vineyards and our 1976 Chardonnay vines produced some incredible fruit. Very low yields of 2.16 tonne/hectare. This is a wine of great purity and vitality. The Chardonnay grapes were as usual hand harvested from 40 year old vines. They were then whole bunch pressed and fermented with wild yeast in barriques. It underwent natural malolactic fermentation prior to receiving 10 months of oak maturation.
