“Very complex but closed with a floral yet deep-pitched nose emerging only after decanting to reveal aromas of fresh roses, blackberry, root beer and sumac. The mouth-filling flavours are trimmed in noticeable wood and muscular tannins, giving the palate density and weight. Overall rounded in shape, it is still sleeping and needs a few more years to hatch. The flavours underneath are intense and concentrated, very complex on the long, mid-weight finish and with masses of promise. The flavour spectrum exists on that side of pinot which is syrah adjacent—spicier, more skinsy, slightly reductive and with more purple fruit. This should gain some elegance as it ages without losing its sinewy muscularity.” – Stephen Wong MW

“Deeply scented pinot noir with intense cassis, dark cherry/berry, vanilla and classy French oak flavours. Bright, youthful wine with power and energy. Accessible now but with good cellaring potential.” – Bob Campbell MW

Tasting Note: 500 years of Pinot winegrowing heritage and 50 years’ experience crafting it, peak in one of the most magnificent but understated Pinot Noirs of New Zealand. Hans’ experience with this variety makes for a powerful and rich portrayal of Burgundy’s greatest varietal. Striking aromas with Hans’ signature purity and silky texture. Matured in the finest French oak barriques for 24 months and matured for 3+ years in bottle before it is released. One for the ages.

Winemaking Notes: The grapes were given four days to cold-soak before a natural wild yeast initiation of the ferment. The wine spent 24 days on skins before being pressed and transferred into 20% new French Allier barriques for malolactic fermentation and further aging for 20 months. Unfined & unfiltered to retain the great flavours. Natural sediments may show.
