Hans Herzog Sauvignon Blanc ‘Sur Lie’ 2016

5 stars – Michael Cooper (2015)
90/100 – Robert Parker (2015)

“The 2015 Sauvignon Blanc offers a relatively savory / vegetal style with pronounced notes of bell peppers, wild thyme and wet pebbles over a core of peaches and lemon curd. Medium-bodied with a silky texture and great intensity of herb and mineral flavors, it finishes with persistent apple and sage notes.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

“Far outside the mainstream regional style, the 2015 vintage was estate-grown and hand-picked on the north side of the Wairau Valley, fermented with indigenous yeasts in French oak puncheons, and wood-aged for 15 months. Bright, light yellow/green, it is mouthfilling and ripely herbaceous, with generous, highly concentrated grapefruit, lime and slight capsicum flavours, a subtle seasoning of oak, and a dry, lasting finish. Drink now or cellar. Certified organic.” – Michael Cooper

Tasting Note: Beautiful fruit flavours and elegance are conveyed through careful handling of these wonderful grapes. Whole bunched pressed with 80% fermented by indigenous yeast in 500lt French oak puncheons with regular lees stirring. Natural secondary malolactic fermentation followed and further 15 months of ageing on its fine lees. The other 20% went into stainless steel to retain its fresh and vibrant character to be married again before bottling. No fining and only light filtration.
