94/100 – Decanter (2015 vintage)

“Mellow, concentrated viognier with nutty, toasted brioche, dried apricot, floral and mixed spice flavours. Distinctive, complex and expressive wine in a rich and weighty style. Already showing good bottle development but still with good potential.” – Bob Campbell MW

“A very dry summer in Marlborough led to reduced yields and concentration of fruit in 2015. The warm growing season also enabled this rare Marlborough Viognier to reach full maturity, offering an attractive, scented nose filled with apricots and elderflowers. Grown organically, the grapes were fermented and matured for 18 months in puncheons. This is a full-bodied, ripe style which caresses the palate. There’s an intense level of fruit concentration but no oiliness, and just enough freshness to bring this home. Apricots and cream linger on the long finish.” – Rebecca Gibb MW, Decanter

Tasting Note: Imagine heady aromas of white flowers, violet, honeysuckle, dried apricots and exotic fruits coming together in a powerful symphony. A bouquet that simply stops you in your tracks. The palate is just as pure and glorious. Gracious opulence with a dawn freshness. Rich and curvaceous across the tongue, yet still so elegant with a silky, smooth lingering finish.

Winemaking Notes:I left the fruit on the skins for an extended time to extract the superb flavours. Then gently pressed and transferred in 500 litre French oak puncheons for a natural (wild yeast) fermentation until there was no sugar left. Its fine lees has been regularly stirred assisting to its remarkable silkiness, complexity and depth. The wine had 18 month in the barrel to mature and flourish to a perfect drink enjoyment when released. No cold stabilization. Unfined and only lightly filtrated to retain the amazing aromas. Naturally beautiful…” – Hans Herzog
