“Puriri Hills Reserve wines rank among our most delicious and ageworthy reds” – Michael Cooper on Puriri Hills Reserve

95/100 – Bob Campbell MW
93/100 – Rebecca Gibb MW
5 stars – Michael Cooper

“A big jump in quality on the Estate label from this vintage with greater concentration, more pronounced fruit flavour and a richer texture. Stylish wine with berry, cherry, plum, spice and floral/violet flavours. Moderately complex wine that delivers power with consummate subtlety.” – Bob Campbell MW

“Puriri Hills is truly different from New Zealand producers, releasing its wines five to eight years after the vintage. The newly launched vintages are ready to drink upon release like this Reserve (renamed Harmonie du Noir from the 2012 vintage). It is savoury, with hints of tobacco, pencil lead and herbal tones and offers up an elegant and fresh expression with a dry, savoury conclusion; fine tea-leaf-like tannis coat the palate.” – Rebecca Gibb MW

“Tasted in late 2017, the 2009 vintage has developed excellent complexity. Full-coloured, mouthfilling and savoury, it is plummy, spicy and nutty, with a hint of dark chocolate, and a firm, long finish. “ – Michael Cooper

Tasting Note: 46% Merlot, 27% Cabernet Franc, 20% Carmenère, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon. Good growing conditions and a moderate crop this vintage resulted in a dense, tightly-packed blend that has taken a while to come around but is now showing at full power. Even more round and ‘complete’ than usual, with a richly fragrant bouquet of ripe plum, cigarbox and spices following through on a seamless, powerful palate with an extraordinarily lengthy, silken finish. Sturdy enough to continue evolving gracefully for many years to come, but already mighty approachable, with all the characteristics of great Bordeaux.
