#3 – Bob Campbell’s top 2016 Central Otago Pinot Noir

“The best of Valli’s subregional pinot noir is from founder, Grant Taylor’s own carefully sited vineyard. Aromatic and elegant, this wine has nicely layered raspberry, violet, fresh herb and spicy oak flavours. Harmonious, high-energy wine with a lengthy finish.” – Gourmet Wine Traveller

“A nose of wild herbs and flowers to this fragrant, elegant pinot noir with red fruits, plenty of spice and gently peppery herbs. Some stony notes too. On the palate there is a vibrant surge of acidity that delivers tart, mouth-watering cherry fruit. Fine, taut and tidy.” – James Suckling

“The mouthfeel has fresh acid vitality with fine, grainy textures and tannin structure providing plenty of presence. The fruit sweetness carries the wine to a very long, lingering finish of savoury dark fruits and herbs. This is a rich, lusciously vibrant Pinot Noir with deeply concentrated flavours of dark-red berry fruits, dark herbs, whole bunch complexities on a well-structured palate. The wine is complete in expression.” – Raymond Chan

“Highly scented, mouthfilling and smooth, with very youthful, rich, vibrant, plummy, cherryish flavours, well-integrated oak, fresh acidity, and loads of potential.” – Michael Cooper

Tasting Note: Rich garnet hue with aromas of rose petals, ripe cherry, mushroom, cardamom and cedar on the nose. The palate has layers of bright red fruit (cherry, raspberry and a hint of cranberry); dried herb (wild thyme, rosemary); and earthiness (mushroom, loam, cedar). Highly aromatic, richly concentrated and incredibly energetic— this Pinot Noir shows the amazing multi-faceted characters of Gibbston. Plenty of intrigue in its youth, this wine will continue to unravel and give tremendous enjoyment for many years.
