“The citrus-colored 2015 Forster Kirchenstück Riesling Trocken GG opens with the aromatically discreet, yet deep and complex nose of a great wine. There are flinty aromas of crushed rocks with lemon oil flavors and a certain refreshing greenness (lemon tree leaves). This wine is full-bodied, dense and compact on the palate, with an elegant texture, fruit flavor and a vital acidity. This is a creamy textured, very complex and powerful wine with a lot of grip and tension. It reveals the persistent finish you may expect from a Forster Kirchenstück, but is also characterized by some oak tannins. The 2015 is really firm and tight and adequately closed; it will open up slowly only next year or the year after. Drink 2018 to 2027.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, August 2016
Tasting Note: A luscious flavour with pronounced fruits set in a compact background which simply radiates excitement and generates a mood for more. It is often compared with the nave of a church, impressive, intense and yet easy to understand.
Winemaking Notes: A particularly unique microclimate distinguishes the Kirchsenstück. The site is directly adjacent to the Forster Church (Kirche is German for church) and is surrounded by a knee-high sandstone wall. The warmth radiated from these constructions benefits the vines. They also direct airflow into the vineyard creating a warm, dry air current that drives out moisture and cold in the evening. The east to southeast-facing vineyard is located at 120 to 140 metres a.s.l. and has a gentle 5 to 10 % slope gradient. The soils of the GL KIRCHENSTÜCK are diverse and vary from basalt and sandstone to limestone rubble and clay with a thick lay1er of clay in the middle section and a water-storing limestone plate two metres under the surface. Spontanenous fermentation in 500L barrels, left on the gross lees for 24 months.
