Kemp Road

Our Story

Kemp Road, now the house brand of Kemp Wine Merchants / Great Little Vineyards, is an actual road in Gisborne where generations of the Kemp Family lived and farmed. We inherit this legacy from Peter Kemp, Managing Director Daniel Kemp’s father.

Originally on Kemp Road the produce consisted of maize, sheep, cattle, tomatoes, beans, and golden queen peaches. James Wattie (founder of the Wattie’s Company) favoured the farm’s silt-based soil where they sourced much of their produce.

The wine story begins with the Kemps growing 2 blocks of grapes, as one of two original growers for Montana wines – Frank and Mate Yukich. They dealt with Frank mostly, with whom they formed a close relationship.

Created to celebrate diverse small-production vineyards around New Zealand, the Kemp Road series brings together great artisan winegrowers, whanau, history and the work of a professional artist in one beautiful package. Kemp Road wines are produced in close collaboration with the best artisan winemakers of New Zealand as one-off special edition releases of their favourite wines.
