“This is from Takaki Okada’s vineyard in the heart of the Brancott Valley, which unusually for Marlborough is unirrigated. There’s some innate ripeness here with bold apple and white peach, but it’s also understated and fine with delicate honey and hazelnut notes blending into the fruit, and a long, salt-laced finish. Tasting Note: Dry Grown. Ripe phenolics and lower acidity lend texture and wonderful shape. Stable and a profound reflection of place. The Folium Vineyard is located in Marlborough’s Brancott Valley. Planted in 1996, this beautiful site has been owned and tended since 2011 by the inimitable Takaki Okada. Soil is Southern Valley Clay, around 1.5 m sitting on top of gravelly silt. Chardonnay from this dry-grown site has ripeness, precision and harmony, reflecting sensitive farming practices and deep-rooted vines.
Winemaking Notes: Hand-harvested 26th March 2022 into 1/2 ton bins. Yield: 30 hL/ha. Whole bunches loaded and pressed slowly over 4 hours to a small stainless steel tank. No enzyme added, only a small sulphur add was made during pressing; a harder press fraction was separated on taste and discarded. After 8 hrs settling, the main press fraction was transferred, with a high percentage of solids, to two 500L seasoned French oak puncheons and one barrique for fermentation. Primary fermentation took 6 weeks to complete. A full and natural malolactic fermentation finished mid Jan. 2023, after which the wine was topped and remained on original lees, without stirring or sulphur, until Apr. 2023. The vessels were then racked to tank and sulphured where they remained on lees for a further eight months until bottled by hand in Jan. 2024. This wine was bottled without fining or filtration. A small natural deposit may occur. Sealed with cork.
