Von Winning Ungeheuer Riesling GG 2018

“Burgundy has Grand Crus, Bordeaux has First Growths, and Germany has Grosses Gewächs. These bone-dry, single-vineyard marvels are bottled in the smallest of quantities and greedily snatched up around the globe. If you crave high-end Burgundy complexity but aren’t always thrilled with the prices, Winning’s Ungeheuer Riesling will change your life.” – Ian Cauble, Master Sommelier
Accolades:
93/100 – Decanter
92+/100 – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Pure, clear, fresh and oaky on the deep, intense and elegant nose, von Wininng’s 2018 Ungeheuer GG “VDP. Grosse Lage” is sweetish, round and all too charming for my personal tastes, but it’s elegant, refined and persistently long on the complex and promising finish. Fine tannin grip and orange peel flavors on the finish.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
“Candied orange peel, dried pineapple and peach on the opulent nose, sweet, vanilla tropical fruit on the palate.” – Decanter
Tasting Note: The Ungeheuer of Forst is one of Germany’s most famous vineyard sites. Riesling from here was poured at the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal in Egypt in 1869. The soil is based on sandstone with an ancient coral reef and volcanic basalt on top. Fermented and aged in 500l oak barrels for 10 months. Dry apricot, earthy notes, and a hint of smoke on the nose resolve on a palate that is balanced and lengthy, with a strong umami character to balance out the flinty minerality and extremely restrained stonefruit character. This wine explodes on your taste buds and remains there with a never-ending echo.
