“Burgundy has Grand Crus, Bordeaux has First Growths, and Germany has Grosses Gewächs. These bone-dry, single-vineyard marvels are bottled in the smallest of quantities and greedily snatched up around the globe. If you crave high-end Burgundy complexity but aren’t always thrilled with the prices, Winning’s Ungeheuer Riesling will change your life.” – Ian Cauble, Master Sommelier

“he intensely yellow-colored 2022 Forster Ungeheuer Riesling GG VDP.Grosse Lage opens with a rich and intensely fruity as well as oaky bouquet with sur lie or brioche notes as well as fresh lemon aromas. Full-bodied, intense and fresh on the palate, this full-bodied, creamy-textured yet also vital and elegant Riesling is still reminiscent of von Winning’s Sauvignon Blanc 500 in terms of style. In any case, it’s a peculiar Ungeheuer in the Pfalz context due to the prominent use of oak. The astringency, however, is positive, and the wine will probably benefit from bottle age.” – Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate
Tasting Note: The Ungeheuer of Forst is one of Germany’s most famous vineyard sites. Riesling from here was poured at the opening ceremony of the Suez Canal in Egypt in 1869. The soil is based on sandstone with an ancient coral reef and volcanic basalt on top. Fermented and aged in 500l oak barrels for 10 months. Dry apricot, earthy notes, and a hint of smoke on the nose resolve on a palate that is balanced and lengthy, with a strong umami character to balance out the flinty minerality and extremely restrained stonefruit character. This wine explodes on your taste buds and remains there with a never-ending echo.
