5 stars – Michael Cooper

“Deep, almost inky red with cassis, blackberry, dark chocolate, spicy oak and dried-berry flavours. A high-energy wine with a medley of intense flavours. Certainly approachable now but should develop well with bottle age.” – Bob Campbell MW

“Deep purple and ruby hues core with a pink and purple rim, very bright. Aromas and flavours of black Doris plums and blackcurrant, baked cherry flesh, dark raspberry, fresh date and barrel spices of vanilla pod and chocolate. Smooth satin textures touch the palate first then acidity and fruits and barrel tannins chime in adding structure and a velvet textured mouthfeel. Dry, complex, taut, youthful and lengthy finish. Best drinking from 2024 through 2030+.” – Cameron Douglas MS

“The refined 2021 vintage has deep, purple-flushed colour. Intensely varietal, it is mouthfilling, with strong, vibrant, plummy, distinctly spicy flavours, fresh acidity, supple tannins and a floral, peppery bouquet. A classy, very youthful red, it’s well worth cellaring to 2026+” – Michael Cooper

Tasting Note: The 2021 Māwhitipana Estate Syrah had a run as dreamy as its origins, a single vineyard in a sunny, hidden valley with a glimpse of the sea. Handcrafted by two families that live on the land as kaitiaki (guardians), this season was long, calm and dry. A hot summer with little rain produced low yields with highly concentrated grapes. The settled harvest period allowed ideal picking conditions.

Vintage Notes: A classic, full bodied Syrah, the 2021 Mawhitipana Estate has vivacious dark berry aromas, and lively hints of pepper and cherry to finish. Enjoy young or come back to it in one to two years to discover the full potential of this wine. A limited vintage with only 148 cases produced.
